About CGMP

Purpose/Mission of the Calumet Green Manufacturing Partnership (CGMP) is to enhance the manufacturing industry in the Millennium Reserve/Calumet Region by addressing the labor/skills mismatch and promoting careers in manufacturing to ensure a competitive workforce is a key asset for regional economic development.

Objectives:
1. Increase employer investment in the Calumet regional workforce.
2. Meet manufacturers’ labor needs by aligning available consultative services, preparatory services and training resources to serve the needs of businesses as well as the needs of unemployed, dislocated and incumbent workers.
3. Promote careers in manufacturing.

    Congratulations! I am writing to share the exciting news that your Calumet Green Manufacturing Partnership program has been nominated for recognition in the Great Lakes Manufacturing Council’s Talented Workforce Initiative.

    The Council embarked on this ambitious drive last Fall to identify the most imaginative and effective workforce development and talent recruitment initiatives in the Great Lakes region. The goal of this initiative is to share the best ideas and approaches for resolving a critical workforce shortage issue that threatens nearly all manufacturers and communities in the bi-national Great Lakes trading region, the fourth largest economy in the world. It is the most frequently cited issue by manufacturers in our region.

    We plan to publicly recognize our nominees and honor the region’s most compelling programs at THE BIG M, in Detroit on Thursday, June 12, 2014.     Official Press Release:
    Local Workforce Agency Recognized at White House Event

    The manufacturing training programs at Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) were recognized as a best practice model at Friday’s White House event on Long Term Unemployment. JARC’s Careers in Manufacturing Programs target strategic skills gaps in the regional manufacturing labor market such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinist and welder. The agency has placed over 200 graduates with 122 firms since January 2011.
    JARC Executive Director Guy Loudon represented the agency at the event and noted, “The president’s comments signaled a break with the ‘train and pray’ approaches of the past. Public investment in job training needs to be aligned with and driven by labor market opportunity and demand.” Loudon added, “We also need think about the quality of jobs. Our national workforce efforts must target industries and occupations that offer family sustaining wages, benefits and authentic career paths.”
    Loudon was joined by Danielle King, a 2012 graduate of JARC’s Careers Manufacturing Programs and now employed by Nortrak as a CNC machinist. King, a mother of one, had lost her job during the recession and was homeless at one point.
    While at JARC, King earned industry certifications from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills and OSHA. During and after her training she worked with JARC’s Center for Working Families and its network of support services to tackle the web of financial and family issues created by unemployment and homelessness.
    After completing the training programs at JARC, King enrolled in the Calumet Green Manufacturing program at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago. She has earned three more industry certifications and plans to earn an Associate’s Degree in Manufacturing Technology. King received a statement of congratulations from Ray Prendergast, Dean of College to Careers at Richard J. Daley College, “We look forward to awarding an Associate of Applied Science degree to Danielle King as she advances her career into CNC programming and beyond.”
    Following a speech by President Obama, King participated in a panel conversation with Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez and three other workers who had completed skills training programs funded by the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) after struggling with long-term unemployment.

    Congratulations to Danielle King, a 2012 graduate of CGMP and came to us for training after completing the JARC program. She will attend a White House event on 1/31/2014 on the issue of long-term unemployment. The president will convene a discussion of best practice strategies for skills training and employment. Below is a copy of the press release prepared by JARC and the National Skills Coalition.

    Danielle is now employed at Nortrak as a CNC machine operator. JARC is honored to participate in this important event, and we think it is a great credit to the work we do together. Danielle moved on to train in the Calumet Green Manufacturing Program (CGMP) at Daley College, one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago, a program funded through the DOL’s Green Jobs Innovation Fund. Danielle earned industry recognized NIMS credentials that helped complete her path toward job readiness.

    Congratulations once again and we look forward to awarding an Associate of Applied Science degree to Danielle King as she advances her career into CNC programming and beyond.

    Official announcement: Local Workforce Agency Invited to White House

    Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC), a non-profit workforce development agency, has been invited to the White House on Friday, January 31 to participate in a meeting with President Obama to discuss the problem of long term unemployment. The event will highlight skills training and employment strategies to help the estimated 4 million long term unemployed adults get back into the labor market. JARC will attend the event along with members of the National Skills Coalition.
    JARC will be represented by Guy Loudon, Executive Director of JARC, and Danielle King, a graduate of JARC’s Careers in Manufacturing Programs, currently employed at Nortrak as a Machine Operator. JARC is considered a national leader of the “Sectoral” approach to job training and workforce development for the manufacturing sector. Loudon explains, “Sectoral programs align skills training with labor market demand as a strategy to drive opportunity for jobs-seekers with barriers to employment.”
    JARC’s programs target strategic skills gaps in the manufacturing sector, including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist and Welder. Since January 2011, JARC has placed 196 low-income adults and unemployed jobseekers in full-time employment at 122 manufacturing firms throughout the Chicago Metro region.
    Secretary of Labor Tom Perez and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker will be joining President Obama at the event to discuss a number of new efforts by the Obama Administration to bring new attention to the long-term unemployed. Among those efforts, it is anticipated that President Obama will be announcing new support for sector partnerships and other workforce intermediaries working with the long-term unemployed, building on the successful models developed by such organizations as JARC.
